Independence Day! Happy 4th!

By TLS | July 4, 2007

Today is the 4th of July! This is one of my favorite holidays, because it brings to mind all the things that make this country great. It’s humbling to reflect on how much we are blessed to be citizens of the United States. I don’t mean that in an arrogant way. I just believe we are truly lucky to be able to enjoy the freedoms that are bestowed upon us in this land.

Yes, of course, it’s frustrating sometimes to see those wackos that take their freedoms to the extreme (how about a little common sense here), but even those crazies are a testament to the great land in which we live.

I hope my children will appreciate this great country as they grow older, and in the spirit of what this country represents, I hope they honor what our forefathers envisioned for us by being examples to those around them - full of pride and honor, but free of arrogance and condescension.

There was a time when people of the world held the United States of America in high regard - a beacon of hope and prosperity. That seems to have been lost in recent decades. What happened to having national pride and compassion towards others with opposing viewpoints? How about being a shining example of democracy and human rights while showing tolerance and understanding for other cultures and ways of life? What about being technically and scientifically innovative to drive prosperity? Where is the will of our young people to seek perfection in education? Doesn’t the success of our nation, both economically and socially, depend on a well educated and interested populace?

I hope we get our act together for the future of our nation. This country is great. Let’s keep it that way! Happy 4th!
