Who will be the next President of the United States?
By TLS | July 7, 2007
It still seems to be a little early to be in throws of political wrangling for the Presidency to me. But clearly that is not the case. The campaigns are in full swing. Ok, fine. So who is going to be the next President? If it’s Clinton I will barf. I don’t know what it is that really puts me off about her, but I do know what it is not. It’s not that she’s a woman. Makes no difference to me. I thought Margaret Thatcher was a fine Prime Minister of Briton. It’s not that she’s a Democrat, either. Admittedly, I have voted Republican for every presidential election in which I’ve voted, but I have been known to vote for a Democrat or two in Congressional races. I just don’t like Clinton. I don’t trust her. When I listen to her speak it all sounds like political garbage to me. So I hope she doesn’t win.
My problem is that I don’t really have a favorite candidate this time around. Nobody jumps out to me as the clear choice.
Juliani’s ok. Some conservatives denounce him as a liberal in conservative clothing. Whatever. I like the guy, but he seems very one-dimensional to me - like everything is about terrorism. Look, I know he’s “America’s Mayor” from 9/11. He did a great job during that crisis. But, move on man. There’s more to running this country than fighting terrorism.
McCain freaks me out. I know he’s a war hero for being captured and tortured in Vietnam, but does that make him the best candidate for President. I’m not so sure.
Romney seems like a smart guy. I like him. He has charisma and wit. He did a great job with Bain, so maybe that would rub off on America with him in the White House. Obviously, he has a huge challenge with the whole Mormon thing. Too bad. I’m sure he would do a good job on the domestic side. Not totally sure how he would fair on the International side, but I think he’d do a find job there, too. New guy in Washington would be good (meaning he’s not someone who’s been on the Hill for decades).
Obama seems ok to me, too. I don’t agree with everything he says and stands for, but what I like about him is that he’s clear about his views and he seems to at least acknowledge the other side’s point of view as valid - even if he disagrees. In his now famous Democratic Convention speech he said,
“There is not a liberal America and a conservative America - there is the United States of America. There is not a black America and a white America and latino America and asian America - there’s the United States of America.”
This resonated with me. I like this guy for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that he is eloquent and well spoken. First Black editor of Harvard Law Review while at Harvard Law School. Impressive. I also like the fact that he’s relatively new to Washington - sort of an outsider still. Good.
So who’s it going to be? I’m not sure. But I hope Obama gets the Democratic nomination and I hope that McCain doesn’t get the Republican nomination. If those two things happen then I think we as a country will be on the right track no matter who wins.

Independence Day! Happy 4th!
By TLS | July 4, 2007
Today is the 4th of July! This is one of my favorite holidays, because it brings to mind all the things that make this country great. It’s humbling to reflect on how much we are blessed to be citizens of the United States. I don’t mean that in an arrogant way. I just believe we are truly lucky to be able to enjoy the freedoms that are bestowed upon us in this land.
Yes, of course, it’s frustrating sometimes to see those wackos that take their freedoms to the extreme (how about a little common sense here), but even those crazies are a testament to the great land in which we live.
I hope my children will appreciate this great country as they grow older, and in the spirit of what this country represents, I hope they honor what our forefathers envisioned for us by being examples to those around them - full of pride and honor, but free of arrogance and condescension.
There was a time when people of the world held the United States of America in high regard - a beacon of hope and prosperity. That seems to have been lost in recent decades. What happened to having national pride and compassion towards others with opposing viewpoints? How about being a shining example of democracy and human rights while showing tolerance and understanding for other cultures and ways of life? What about being technically and scientifically innovative to drive prosperity? Where is the will of our young people to seek perfection in education? Doesn’t the success of our nation, both economically and socially, depend on a well educated and interested populace?
I hope we get our act together for the future of our nation. This country is great. Let’s keep it that way! Happy 4th!

Princesses, Princesses
By TLS | June 30, 2007
Today I spent several hours working on the web site for the business that Lisa and Melissa are doing, Vegas Princess Parties. The web site is at www.vegasprincessparties.com. It is coming together, but still needs some work. Mostly, we just need more pictures of them as the princesses. It’s pretty cool that they can both work together with that business. And they are so great at it, too!

Settling in Vegas
By TLS | June 28, 2007
So it’s been about two weeks now that we’ve been in Las Vegas. It was weird at first - didn’t feel like it was really our home. But now, it totally feels like home. We love the house, the proximity to stores, food, work, school, and church - very nice. I timed my drive home from work yesterday. Left at 4:59 PM and arrived at home at 5:03 PM. That is awesome! I used to waste 1.5 hours every day driving to and from work. The extra time is very well spent with the family now.
It’s great to have Kevin and Melissa close by - insta-friends! We’re excited that we finally get to live by them again. Hope they don’t get sick of us!
Lisa has made a new friend already, too - someone from church. They have done a few things here and there. Her name is Renee (not sure how she spells it) and she and her husband have kids he same ages as Matt and Julie, so it works out nicely.
I’m still banging away at work. With the move I’ve felt behind on the cases I’m working on, but I’m slowly catching up. Hope to be up to speed in a day or two. Once I catch up I’ll start doing a little work for my bro-in-law at his law firm (few hours a week - just to start learning the ropes). Hopefully it will help me get the swing of things before law school.
Ths kids miss their friends from Utah, but love having a pool here! They’ve swam more in the last week than they’ve done the rest of their lives combined. Both of them have already learned to swim. A few more weeks and they should be regular fishies.
All in all we are settling in well. It’s still a bit hot here, but we like it.
